Geography at The Telford Park School

According to the comedian, actor, writer and TV travel presenter, Geography is a living breathing subject, constantly adapting itself to change. It is dynamic and relevant and a subject which holds the key to our future. It is at the forefront of understanding many of the world’s current events.

The world in which we live is continually changing. The study of Geography helps students to understand our dynamically changing world and to prepare them to become responsible global citizens. Students should be inspired and encouraged to develop a sense of wonder about places. Geography explains how places and landscapes are formed, how people and the environment interact and the links between societies and economies. Geographical enquiry encourages questioning, investigation and critical thinking about issues affecting the world and people’s lives, for the present and future. Geography inspires students to think about their own place in the world, their values and responsibilities to other people, to the environment and to the sustainability of the planet.



All students at KS3 are expected to develop a wide range of skills and knowledge in order to progress into KS4.

Along with all schools in the country things are changing and changing fast. Currently we study and assess the following human and physical topics:

Year 7:

What is Geography and Mapskills? What is the Geography of the UK?

Settlements and Urbanisation, Rivers and Tourism.

Year 8:

Environmental Issues, the Amazon Rainforest – an Ecosystem under Threat,

Weather and Climate, World Population Issues and Coasts.

Year 9:

Tectonic Hazards – Earthquakes and Volcanoes, Development, Economic Activities, India, China and a current topic that can be done as a project.

Assessments at KS3 take place twice per topic and vary in structure from tests and exams to extended pieces of writing.


Year 11:

Currently 11 are following the OCR B GCSE Geography Course:

Topics covered are:

Unit 1: Rivers and Coasts

Unit 2: Population and Settlement

Unit 3: Natural Hazards

Unit 4: Economic Development

Students are regularly assessed in two tiers – Foundation and Higher on each topic by completing past examination papers and questions to ensure students know and understand what is expected of them in the final examinations. This also gives staff an accurate guide of how our pupils are performing against the national standard to allow for accurate tracking of pupils progress.

There are three formal assessments:

  1. Geographical Enquiry - worth 25% of the total GCSE mark and is a 2000 word controlled assessment. The task requires the collection of primary data by all students so therefore fieldwork is necessary, the location of which changes according to the question.

  2. Sustainable Decision Making Exercise - this is a 1 hour 30 minute written paper and is worth 25% of the total GCSE mark.

  3. Terminal Examination (Key Geographical Themes) - worth 50% of the total GCSE mark and is a 1 hour 45 minute written paper.

Year 10:

Year 10 are following the new WJEC Eduqas GCSE GEOGRAPHY A Course:

Topics covered are:

Theme 1: Changing Physical and Human Landscapes

Theme 2: Environmental and Development Issues

Theme 3: Applied Fieldwork Enquiry – all students will be required to undertake two fieldwork visits based on topics set by the exam board.

As with Year 11, students are regularly assessed during these topics using exam style questions.

At the end of Year 11 there are three formal exams:

  • Theme 1: 1 hour 30 minutes exam worth 35%

  • Theme 2: 1 hour 30 minutes exam worth 35%

  • Theme 3: 1 hour 30 minutes exam worth 30%

Homework in Geography:
Homework is set on a regular basis and is expected to be completed by all students to a high standard. Ample time is given to complete homework assignments and tasks vary throughout the year. This includes an ILP for Years 7 – 9.
