Computing at Telford Park School has two jobs: keeping pupils safe in a world that is mostly online, and teaching them to make the machine do what they want rather than the other way round.

Pupils study worked examples and finish partly-written programs before they face a blank screen, because learning a new command and designing a whole solution at the same time defeats most beginners. Skills learned early are then demanded again in later projects, so nothing is a one-lesson trick.

Year 7 covers e-safety and digital literacy, interactive media made for a real audience, and programming with algorithms in Scratch, where pupils are expected to find and fix their own errors. The habit underneath is worth more than any one language: take a problem apart, put it in order, test it, and fix what fails.
