Food Preparation and Nutrition at Telford Park School teaches something every pupil will use whatever else they do: how to feed themselves and other people well. Pupils cook, and they learn what cooking does to food and what food does to the body.

A kitchen is a place where too much at once is dangerous, so techniques are demonstrated close up and rehearsed before any pupil attempts a full dish under time. A knife skill is taught on its own and practised until the hands know it, and only then used inside a full dish. John Sweller described how little the mind can hold while it is still learning, so the skill and the recipe are never both new on the same day. Techniques reappear in later dishes until pupils stop thinking about them and simply do them.

Pupils learn knife skills and hygiene in Year 7, food safety and nutrition in Year 8, and the science of cooking and the cuisines of the world in Year 9. The GCSE then covers nutrition across a lifetime, food science experiments, and two assessed tasks with real deadlines. They leave able to cook a meal, cost it, and say what it will do for whoever eats it.
